art.jpg Ok, Quizzo Bowl stuff is kind of all over the site right now, so I figured I would consolidate. Here ya go:

Big ups to my main man DJ Starr (yeah, it's his real name). After he took great photos of last year's Quizzo Bowl, I had to get him back this year. And this years pics are every bit as good. I was so excited when I got the photos I decided to make a little video of them (above.) But the video doesn't really do justice to how good these pics are, as they lose some of their quality on Youtube, and there were some I had to delete for time considerations. Be sure to go here to check them all out.

Big thanks to my man Steve for shooting some video of Saturday night's show. Here is my opening rap plus a classic Haulin' Oats tune (give the video a few seconds to get started). Plus you can watch Smackdown and Maryanne try to convince Gabe to dance with them in the foreground (unsuccesfully).

dimsum.jpg ...17th place finishers You Dim Sum You Lose Sum. Very funny. You guys win a $25 gift certificate...somewhere. Shoot me an email and I'll rummage up something for you guys. Nice work.
lamdawin.jpg Another year, another sell out, as almost 300 people packed the New Golden Palace in their quest to be named Philly's smartest team (and see a kickass Hall and Oats cover band). In the end, it was the defending champs, Lambda Lambda Lambda, emerging with a slim victory. The Lambdas got a scare from called Sold Our Soul Train (a horned team that included Trivia Art, Smackdown, and D-Mac) but in the end retained their enormous trophy for at least another year with the narrowest win in Quizzo Bowl history, 124-121.

Quizzo Bowl V, held at the New Golden Palace at 8th and Washington, was about more than mere questions however. The show opened with a preview of an upcoming quizzo documentary, contained three rockin' sets from Haulin' Oats, and also featured a Chinese Lion Troupe performing at half-time.
jgtoats.jpg
It started as a high scroring affair, with 8 teams recording perfect round ones and 29 of the 36 scoring 10 or more points (Out of a possible 13). The 50/50 round (Before or After 1967, the year Hall and Oates met) was a bit tougher. At the end of two, perennial Bards stronghorse the Hurtin Bombs had taken the lead. I had given a hint as to what the 3rd Round was going to be in an interview on NBCPhiladelphia, and some teams decided to study. It paid off, as the round was indeed "China", though with a few wrinkles. (I'll post questions soon.) Lambda and the Kingdom were tied for the lead after three, and it looked like a two team race. But Sell Your Soul Train was not to be discounted, as they went on a tear in the final round, and missed out on immortality by a single year in a question about life expectancy. Lambda escaped with a narrow but impressive 124-121 victory (they only missed four questions out of 48) and headed for the afterparty with their enormous trophy in tow. Got any fond favorite memories of the night? Leave 'em below.

trophy.jpg Here ya go. This will tell you how you were doing after each round, and what your final ranking was. If you see any mistakes let me know.
newgoldensmall.jpg First of all, I expect to be sold out by the end of the day. I have about 25 tickets left. If you have not already bought tickets, please do so ASAP. You can try to walk up tomorrow in case someone cancels, but it's gonna be highly unlikely. Here's the details. If anyone has any questions, email me today.

TIME: Doors open at 5 p.m. Show starts at 6 p.m. sharp. I expect to be done by 9 p.m.
LOCATION: New Golden Palace. Corner of 8th and Washington.
ENTERTAINMENT: Hall and Oates cover band, as well a Chinese Lion Troupe. Also, a trailer of the Quizzo Documentary done last year to kick off the festivities.
VIP: Teams that dress up will get the VIP treatment. You will get the closest tables, and if at all possible I will try to deliver beer to your table at some point during the evening. You will also get a team photo from our professional photographer. (If more than 15 teams dress up, it's gonna be the first 15 who get the first three rows.)
QUESTIONS: Questions will be a little tougher than usual, but not too brutal. There will be some multiple choice questions to even out the playing field. (Deal with it, nerds). 12 questions per round. You will not get sheets back after each round, so if you want to doublecheck your scores, you might want to keep a copy of your answers.
FOOD AND DRINK: Beer and wine will be provided free of charge, though I do expect you to take good care of your bartenders Corey and Liz. (No-one under 21 y/o will be admitted to the show. No exceptions!) Food will be available for an additional charge.
PARKING: Street parking. I don't think it's gonna be too bad on Washington at that time of day. If you are going to drink then by all means take a cab.
AFTERPARTY: The afterparty will be upstairs at Downey's on Front and South Street Street starting at 9:30 p.m. There will be live music there too (No, not Hall and Oates tunes. Three sets of that should be plenty). It's gonna be free admission, but please bring a few bones to tip the band! Lagers will be $2.50 a pop.
HOW MUCH RAPPING WILL THERE BE AT THIS EVENT? None.

newgolden.jpg First of all, just a heads up. We will be starting at precisely 6 p.m. on Saturday, not the normal Johnny Goodtimes schedule. Doors open at 5 p.m., but be in your seat by six, because that's when the trailer to the Quizzo Bowl Documentary will begin. Also, I need one more person to help with scoring, preferably someone with a little Microsoft Excel knowledge. If you aren't playing but wanna see the show and are good at grading papers, let me know. I will have tickets on me tonight at quizzo, or you can purchase them online. It's gonna be a hell of a show folks. Where else will you see a Hall and Oates cover band, a Lion Troupe, and have a chance to win $800 this weekend?
chinesenewyear.jpg Got our halftime entertainment, gang. A Lion Troupe, like the ones you see on Chinese New Year, will be entertaining us for halftime (which we are gonna move back to the end of the third round). This is gonna be off the hook. As far as ticket sales, we just crossed the 125 sold mark, and I am holding another 50 for people. That leaves 100 unclaimed tickets left total. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL SATURDAY TO BUY YOUR TICKETS. I am fairly certain they will be sold out by then. I will have them on me tonight at quizzo, or you can buy them online.
newgoldensmall.jpg There's a lot going on today. We've lined up a Quizzo Bowl sponsor (Sly Fox) and an afterparty (Downey's.) We also got a little love from our good friends over at NBCPhiladelphia, who did a little write up on our event. You should probably check out the article. It contains a pretty big hint about what one of the rounds is going to be. If you wanna buy tickets now, you can purchase them here, or you can see me this week at quizzo. Halftime act will be announced tomorrow. For more info on the event, click here.
slyfox2.jpg For the 2nd straight year, the good folks at Sly Fox Brewery are gonna help us party at Quizzo Bowl. Sly Fox is generously donating several kegs to the cause. Beer will be free at Quizzo Bowl.
downeys.jpg I searched far and wide for the perfect afterparty venue and I found it. Don't know if you've seen the upstairs at Downey's lately, but it extremely awesome and we get to use the upstairs balcony which has a great view of the River. I hadn't been upstairs in a while and was blown away by how good it looks. This place is gonna be perfect for the afterparty. Oh, and Lagers are on sale for $2.50. Boo-ya.
qb5-thumb-284x191.jpg We're heading down the home stretch gang. If you want to buy tickets, you've got two choices. You can either buy them from me this week at quizzo or you can buy them online by clicking here. I'm up to about 75 sold, with another 100 or so that I am holding for teams that are certainly gonna buy. That leaves about 100 tickets left. Don't wait until the last minute! This could sell out before the day of (Plus it costs $5 extra bucks the day of.) For more info on QBV, click here. If you have a smaller group, that's cool. Just let me know and I'll team you up with somebody.
qb44.jpg The run on tickets has begun. Get your team's act together and get your tix! You can buy them from me tonight at the Good Dog at 8 p.m. and at the Bards at 10 p.m. Or you can buy them online by clicking here. The fee to purchase online is only like $1.62 or something. I am still in talks with my halftime act. Hopefully will know something in the next 24 hours. The FAQs about Quizzo Bowl are here. And remember, teams that wear uniforms or dress outrageously get VIP seating. See ya tonight!
tsunami.jpg The first few rows of seating to QBV will go not to the teams that arrive earliest but to the teams that arrive flashiest. VIP seating this year is being reserved for teams that either dress outlandishly (and yes, I will be the final arbiter of what constitutes "outlandish") or dress in team uniforms. I saw how just about every single team dressed up for Denver's Geek Bowl and I refuse for Philadelphia to be outdone by those clowns in the mountains. If you are curious where you can get team uniforms for a fair price, contact Triple Play Sporting Goods at 9th and Christian. (215) 923-5466. They've always given me a good rate and you'll be supporting local business to boot. Also, I'm coming up with more ways to give VIP status to teams that dress up, so I'll have more details soon. You've got plenty of time to pull this together. Now get crackin'!

Alright, kids, just gonna answer a few questions I've been getting about Quizzo Bowl V, so you know where we stand as we get ready to head down the homestretch.
WHEN: March 28th. Doors Open at 5:00 p.m., Trivia starts at 6:00 p.m.
WHERE: New Golden Palace. 8th and Washington.
WHAT: The world's premier quizzo competition, Quizzo Bowl V will determine who will be crowned the Best Team in Quizzo.
PRIZE MONEY: Bumping it up this year. Winning team walks with $800 cash, 2nd place gets $400, 3rd place gets $200.
ENTERTAINMENT: Haulin' Oats, a Hall and Oates cover band, will perform between rounds. I am working on the halftime show. There is also talk of another Philly music legend making a appearance. More on that next week. Also, before the game begins, we'll be showing the debut movie trailer to the Quizzo Documentary that was shot last year.
TICKETS: Tickets can be purchased in one of two places. Either by going online and purchasing them here, or by buying them from me at quizzo next week. The tickets are $25 (there is a $1.62 surcharge for ordering online) and that includes not only the show but also beer and wine. They will be $30 at the door.
FOOD: The New Golden Palace will be selling dim sum.
TEAM MAXIMUM: Team maximum is 8 players. Any team with less than 6 players will share a table with another small team or possibly team up. Which is fine, but we just have to maximize space so that as many people can play as want to. I am expecting a sellout, so get your tickets early!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to shoot me an email.

newgolden.jpg First off, no Quizzo at the Good Dog tonight. Ok, so that means no new quiz at Bards (same quiz as Tuesday). I have a million projects going on right now and can use the extra time. As for Quizzo Bowl, a few notes:
  • Tickets are selling well. We're up around 30 sold in the first few days, and really none of the regulars have bought yet.
  • Please get your team together and then buy tickets! It just makes things much easier for all of us. It's gonna be packed in tight that night, so I need to maximize the seats we have. I need to make sure to not oversell of undersell, and since I'm a knucklehead, I'll never figure it out if people keep buying tix two at a time. So try to put the team together and get your money right, if at all possible. Thanks!
  • Yes, the rumors are true. The between round entertainment will be a Hall and Oates cover band. There are also rumors of a Philly music legend also joining us for a short set. I am still working on the halftime act.
  • I will have tickets on me tonight at the Bards. Tickets are also available online.
  • Team maximum is 8 people. If you have a team of less than 6 people, expect to have another team to share your table or team up with you.

oatshaul2.jpg Last year it was Black Elvis who had people dancing in the aisles to the sounds of the King. This year Hall and Oates, the deadliest duo in Philadelphia history, are brought back to life** with a perfomance that only Haulin' Oats can bring (no, not these guys. The other Haulin' Oats.) Quizzo Bowl V will be the final performance of a cross country tour for Haulin' Oats that included stops in such rock havens as Bethesda, Dover, and Wilkes-Barre. "We are going all out in a performance for the ages, and then we are retiring from the Hall and Oates impersonation business," said singer Clark Haul of the band, which has built a cult following in the seedy, dimly lit bars of Winchester, VA. "This is going to be like Jordan retiring from the Bulls, except that we really mean it," added guitarist Jimmy Oats. "Last Haulin' Oats show ever," added Larry Oats (no relation to Jimmy). "It's going to be like when Richard Nixon retired from politics in 1962," added drummer Brian Oats (no relation to Jimmy or Larry). "Last one. The penultimate. Wait, does penultimate mean next to last? Then nevermind. It's the one after that one. The penultimate one will be held in the parking lot of the Germantown Acme on Friday morning, if anybody is interested." So if you've ever wanted to see Winchester, VA's FINEST Hall and Oates cover band, then Quizzo Bowl V is your final opportunity. Don't blow it! Tickets are on sale now, and can be bought either online or from JGT at Quizzo. First tickets were sold last night. $25 a pop, and that includes booze, Haulin' Oats, and your shot at the $800 top prize. A damn good deal. You can buy your tickets here or at quizzo.

**Wait, what? But they're not even dead.

qb5.jpg Tickets to Quizzo Bowl V are now onsale. You can purchase them online by clicking here (There will be a minimal surcharge) or you can purchase them from me at quizzo, as I will have tickets on me. Tickets are $25 a pop, and that includes the chance for the big prize money, the quiz, the band, the halftime show, and beer and wine, as well as a shot at numerous giveaways. Not a bad deal. And get your tickets ahead of time. They will be $30 at the door.
newgolden.jpg It's On, folks. Saturday March 28th is gonna be when it all goes down at the New Golden Palace at 8th and Washington. Doors Open at 5 p.m., game kicks off at 6 p.m. Still looking for band, halftime act, and afterparty, so if anybody has any ideas, drop 'em below.
envelope.jpg QB IV is now history, but before we move on, I did want to acknowledge a few folks. First of all, the good people at Zipcar for their help. People asked me, "Why didn't you go with Philly Car Share?", and the bottom line is that they weren't interested in helping with QB IV and Zipcar was. In my book, score one for Zipcar for helping out local small business. Also, wanna thank the Locust Rendezvous. They were a huge help, and I hope that when you guys are thinking about where to grab your next drink, you consider the Rendezvous. An extremely friendly staff, one of the few places in Center City that serves pitchers, great prices, and a room full of characters that come free of charge. Speaking of beer, I got a lot of compliments regarding our choice of suds. Sly Fox came up huge, and $25 for all you can drink of top quality beer is almost unheard of, and I want to thank them for making that happen. The Beauty Shop Cafe, my neighborhood coffee shop, decided that they wanted to help out as well. Great spot on 20th and Fitzwater. Free wireless, great coffee, great tea, great bakes goods. The Philly Pretzel Factory gave us a couple hundred free pretzels, and though I never got time to eat one, I heard they were a hit. And to Mental Floss, for hooking us up with all of those magazines. Thumbnail image for 150px-Sly_fox_brewery_logo.jpg

A few individuals I want to thank as well. Vaughn and Eric of Axis of Evil Knieval came up HUGE, not only going out to Royersford to get the kegs, but then dragging them up three flights of stairs. Vaughn then stayed and help with the myriad of duties that we were working on in the hours leading up to the show. The show literally would not have come off without all of the help I got from a number of other people as well: Suzy/Ginger (did programs and helped grade papers), Trivia Art (did scoresheets and computer scoring program, as well as posted info on his site), D-Mac (promotional help), Chip Chantry (not only helped with halftime show, but also graded papers and kept score on computer), Corey and Liz (the bartenders), the WID, and Black Elvis and the Burnin Loves. Janella, Ms. Carol, and Ms. Michael at the Blue Horizon were absolutely a joy to work with. And of course a special thanks to my Mom and Dad, who ran a million small errands in the last few days to help make sure we got all the food, sodas, napkins, etc. we needed. Finally, thank you guys for making it all the way up to North Broad to play quizzo on a cool spring night. I hope you all had as much fun as I did, without screaming and cussing as much as I did in the hours leading up to the event (much of which was captured by the documentary crew, embarrassingly enough), and hope to see you again next year when we do it again!

picture-59.jpg This year, the topic was, "Did it Happen before or after the Blue Horizon was built?" The Horizon was built in 1865. So Before or After 1865.

picresized_th_1207279551_DSC_0787.jpg Alright, well I'm headed out to the ballpark to see the Phils get their first win. Last year, they were terrible in games I attended (I think like 3-11), but I'm pretty sure that's gonna turn around this year. Anyways, I'm taking the rest of the day off, but you'll be able to keep yourselves amused with all of these new pics from Quizzo Bowl (taken by Jonah Detofsky). Also, be sure to vote and let me know where we should do it next year. Go Phillies!

After a long 14 month wait between QBs III and IV, I think it's not gonna be so long until Quizzo Bowl V. I'd like to get back to doing it in late January, if possible. Here a few thoughts on venues:
World Cafe Live: Obviously better acoustics, closer location for most people, and to be honest, less work for me (They do ticketing, insurance, security, etc.) And as a man of leisure, the less work the better. But after three straight sellouts from a local act, they seemed extremely indifferent about hosting QB IV, which was kind of a turnoff.
Blue Horizon:Lots of character, the employees were a pleasure to do business with, plenty of room, and the opportunity for free beer. Downsides: a little bit out of the way, a little bit chilly (though that could probably be corrected if we did it again), and the acoustics were so-so (not the sound guys fault, just the way it's gonna be in a large old building not built with acoustics in mind).
Somewhere New: Would be fun to do it like the Super Bowl, where we got to check out a new venue each year. The question is, where? After doing lots of research on this, I have discovered that there are plenty of places in Philly that sit 200 people, but almost none that sit 300. I'd love to do it at a place like the Troc, but it's simply not big enough. Houston Hall on Penn's campus or The Armory are big enough, but I'd need to rent tables and chairs and find a way to get them to those places, which sounds like a nightmare. If anyone has any ideas, please post them below.

jgtginger.jpg And they're pretty awesome. My man DJ was official photographer, and he got some really good ones, including shots of plenty of teams. Check 'em out.
picresized_1207023707_blackelvis1.jpg Those of you who saw me on Wednesday night saw a nearly broken man. I had sold only about 150 tickets (these things are usually sold out by the Wednesday before), and, having expected to sell numerous tickets at the Black Sheep that night, I sold one. There was no hope of getting help from the TV or the papers. There was no money in the budget for advertising. The Inquirer, after making overtures of doing a story on it, backed off. The Weekly and the City Paper decided not to cover it for the first time ever. After three straight classics, it looked like Quizzo Bowl IV was gonna be a dud. And it would be a failure in front of the Burnin' Loves, a band made up of guys I had grown up with. But, in a show of what an incredible community we have, things started to turn around, Blues Brothers style. Trivia Art posted a contest on Foobooz, D-Mac did the same on PhiladelphiaWillDo. Dark Horse John sent a message to his listserve. Jam Master Sean told the RPS crowd. Chip posted bulletins on Myspace, as did Steve O., Smackdown, and the Lovely Ginger. Gabe and Andy at the Temple Law School posted flyers all over the facility, while I posted them on bulletin boards, walls and bathroom doors at Temple and Penn. Despite being ignored by the press, the buzz started to spread, and by the time doors opened at the Blue Horizon at 7 p.m., a sea of people poured through. In the end, it worked out incredibly. I had set up 38 tables of 8 eight each, and in the end every seat was filled, for a total of 304 people, our 4th consecutive Quizzo Bowl sellout.

jgtboxing.jpg
As for the event itself, it was legendary. The Burning Loves opened sans Black Elvis, and got the crowd warmed up with a few classics, such as "Hard to Handle" and "Me and Bobby McGee". JGT broke his promise of not rapping, and opened with "Mama Said Knock You Out". Then we began a rather difficult easy round. Of the 38 teams, only one, Dork Sided, got all 12 questions correct. The much maligned defending champs, the Sofa Kingdom, aced Round Two, and took the lead after the first two rounds. It was then time for the halftime show, featuring Chip Chantry and the Legendary WID. Chip's set went pretty well, despite the fact that the audio was a little off in the old building. Then came the WID. I wish he had performed on stage instead of in front, because I think some people in the back couldn't really see what was going on.

wid.jpg Long story short, he got sha-na-nad off the stage, despite pulling out two stuffed lions, and saying "Hey, I've got my pride," then dry humping one of the lions and saying, "What do you think I'm F****** Lion?" (How is that not hilarious? I just don't get you people.) There are already talks of a "WID's Revenge" show, so stay tuned.

On to Round Three, the wild card round. After starting off slowly, two time champions the Champs (aka Rob's Zombies) were one of only two teams to pull off a perfect round, and moved within a question of the lead heading into the final round. The other team to have a perfect round three, Lambda Lambda Lambda had a narrow lead, with 71 points. MAGMA was close behind with 69, and Blowback Chicken Army (featuring Triva Art, D-Mac, Smackdown, and a few Western Omelette's) were in 3rd with 68. The Kingdom and the Zombies both had 67. Dork Sided, looking for the upset, was still within a question of the lead, with 66.
bh1.jpg
Meanwhile, between rounds, Black Elvis had completely caught fire. His booming voice and the bands rollicking play had the place rocking. Suspicious Minds was amazing, Hound Dog was downright nasty, and they ended the night by getting away from the Elvis with a little Chuck Berry "Johnny B. Good". By the end of the night, the nerd elite were dancing in the aisles. Unreal.

But back to the action. Round Four, which kicked off with Eye of the Tiger playing in the background, was a doozy. When the dust settled, the Resevous Dogs aka The Jams, with an impressive final round, had moved to 5th place. MAGMA finished in 4th. Rob's Zombies, despite losing their effervescent leader during the previous year (I missed him eating other peoples food while taking his table at this year's Quizzo Bowl. And great team name. I am quite certain that would approve.), finished an impressive third. So it came down to two teams. The defending champs the Sofa Kingdom and Steve O.'s team, Lambda Lambda Lambda. The crowd began banging on the tables as I prepared to read off the winners, followed by an actual drum roll. Ladies and gentlemen, "Your 2008 Quizzo Bowl Champions...Lambda Lambda Lambda!"
jgttrophy2.jpg
The crowd went wild, the Kingdom hung their heads, and the Lambdas began jumping up and down as if they had just made the Final Four. The Kingdom hung their heads as if their three pointer at the buzzer had grazed the iron. Unlike the Final Four, there were no TV news crews there to record the moment, no write-ups about it in the Sunday paper. But there is no denying that the Kingdom was overthrown. The Revolution was not televised, but I'll be damned if it wasn't a hell of a lot of fun.

trophy2.jpg Hey gang, click here to see how your team did in Quizzo Bowl. (Scores have been fixed.)
web.jpg Congratulations to your 2008 championship team, Lamda Lamda Lamda, at the 4th consecutive sold out Quizzo Bowl! I had fun. I hope you guys did too. Be back with a full wrap up, lots of photos, and a full scoreboard so you can see how your team did on Monday. I am now gonna kick back on the couch for the next 10 hours and watch basketball and baseball while eating unhealthy food and passing in and out of consciousness. If you got any good shots of last nights show, please send em to me. I'm gonna do a photo gallery manana.

Elvis-Presley.jpg OK, gang, here is a final rundown of everything you need to know about the most prestigious Quizzo event in the history of the world.
  • HOW TO GET TICKETS: Click here. There will be also be tickets at the door. However, I only have a certain amount of tables set up for teams. Once they are filled, doors close. I have about 220 sold and room for about 60 more people. To ensure yourself a seat, get your tickets now. If you are going to get your tickets there, I would suggest being there when doors open at 7 p.m. Online sales end tonight.
  • WHERE: Legendary Blue Horizon (1314 North Broad Street) Cross street is Thompson, two blocks north of Girard. I will have cab numbers in the program so you can call for a cab after the event.
  • WHEN: Tomorrow night! Doors open at 7 p.m., band comes on at 7:30 p.m., quizzo start at about 8:15 p.m.
  • WHAT DO I GET FOR MY MONEY: For a mere $25, you get all you can drink Sly Fox (at least until we kick 6 kegs), Black Elvis, Chip Chantry, and the Legendary WID, probably my favorite comedian in Philly. Oh yeah, and a shot at the $1,000 purse. Also, I will have lots of gift certificates to give away in random drawings. In addition, the first 100 people through the door get a free copy of Mental Floss magazine. You will not find a better deal than this in Philadelphia this weekend. Or ever, for that matter.
  • FOOD AND DRINK: Like I said, plenty of beer. Will also have several bottles of wine, for the sissies more sophisticated palates. As far as food, I would suggest eating before you arrive. I will have soft pretzels, courtesy of the Philly Pretzel Factory, and some chips, but nothing too hearty. There will be also be food for sale at the afterparty.
  • AFTERPARTY: Going down at the Urban Saloon. Great bar, if you haven't already been. They are totally styling us out with $2.50 drafts and $3.50 imports and crafts. They will also have food for sale (they have good, inexpensive food).
  • HOW DO I GET SO MUCH BANG FOR MY BUCK? Thanks to the sponsors on the right side of the page, we were able to keep prices extremely reasonable. I cannot thank them enough for their contributions to this event. I do ask that you please check them out when you get a chance.

Oh, and one more thing: I have known several member so the Burnin' Loves since I was about 5 years old. So tomorrow night is your chance to find out what a loser popular guy I was in high school. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. This is gonna be a blast. Hope to see you there!

quizzobowl130 010 (Medium).jpg Ah yes, the first Quizzo Bowl. Ran a little long, but Nate Wiley and the Crowd Pleasers kept there from being a meltdown with their sweet soulful sounds. Johnny Cash impersonator The Man in Black did a great job kicking off the show, the bellydancer at halftime was a near disaster, and Where's Johnny (aka The Champs) edged the Sofa Kingdom, then making their first JGT quizzo appearance. Anyways, here's a few questions from the first big event.
  1. What did Vincenzo Peruggia steal in 1911, making him a national hero of sorts in his native Italy?
  2. Who are the only two players to win back to back Super Bowl MVPs?
  3. In what state did the Wounded Knee Massacre, take place in 1890?
  4. What fundamental discovery in the field of nuclear science did Sir James Chadwick make in 1932?
  5. What country do the Galapagos Islands belong to?
  6. Much of our knowledge about the Mount Vesuvius eruption of 79 AD comes from this Roman’s letter to the historian Tacitus?
  7. What sea is located on Turkey’s northern coast?
  8. How many laps are in the Daytona 500?
  9. How many golden tickets did willy wonka hide in chocolate wonka bars?
  10. What’s the name of Beethoven’s only opera?
Answers after the jump.

picresized_th_1206517358_DSCF0429.jpg One thing that will separate this Quizzo Bowl from those that have come before is the venue. After three years at the modern confines of the World Cafe Live, this year we'll be taking a trip back in time, as the event goes down at the hallowed Blue Horizon.

The Horizon was built in 1865 as three different row homes for the nouveau riche. In 1914, the buildings were adapted to house a Moose Lodge, whose presence is still felt. The lobby features a ticket booth built in 1914 with the Lodge's name and number still imprinted on the glass, and on one side of the stage you'll find a plaque honoring members of the local Moose Lodge that died in World War I. On the other side you'll find a bust of former "dictator" of the Lodge, John Ford.
picresized_th_1206517675_DSCF0431.jpg
The venue was converted to a church in the 1960s, and fights began being staged there in 1961. It quickly made a name for itself as a premiere boxing venue, with 33 World Champions boxing there, including Bernard Hopkins, Meldrick Taylor, and Tim Weatherspoon. In 1999 it was voted the Number One Boxing Venue in the World by the readers of Ring magazine. The Horizon is also used for a variety of parties and cabarets, but in its 143 year history, it has never played host to a major trivia event. Until Saturday, March 29th, 2008, when history will be made in a building already rich on it. BUY TICKETS NOW or see me tonight at quizzo.

picresized_th_1206423310_DSCF0426.jpg Just crossed the 100 tickets sold plateau. If you are interested in buying tix, either click here or come out to one of my quizzos this week. I will also be at the Dark Horse tonight at 9 p.m. with tickets on me. For more info on QB IV, click here.
chip.jpg As you are well aware, the Legendary WID is going to be entertaining at the Quizzo Bowl. His opening act will be none other than JGT political correspondent Chip Chantry. Chip was named Philadelphia's 3rd Funniest Comedian in a contest that featured over 100 comics this past year at Helium. He would have won if he had been funnier. Chip is a regular at Helium and has played just about every venue between here and New York City, including a few firehouses. Chip's funny. You're gonna like him.
envelope.jpg The good people at the Locust Rendezvous have agreed to help sponsor Quizzo Bowl IV. The Vous, the site of Wednesday night quizzo on Broad and Locust, has some of the best drink prices in Center City, and is a great place to see the games with their new HDTVs. The NASCAR-ation of this event continues! But again, without local companies helping out, $25 for an amazing show and all you can drink would have been impossible. So please check out the companies to the right when you get a chance.
blue-horizon new-thumb-400x253.jpg Ok, you know the basics. Saturday, March 29th at the Blue Horizon on 1314 North Broad Street. Kickoff at 8 p.m. Here are a few of the questions I've been getting.

Where can I get tickets?
You can purchase them from me at each of my events this week, or you can purchase them online here.

How much are tickets?
I have always made an effort to keep Quizzo Bowl Tickets as cheap as possible while ensuring that I don't totally lose my ass. The $25 per ticket in advance ($30 day of the show) is actually the best deal ever, as it will include not only the show, but also your drinks for the evening, courtesy of Sly Fox.

Why should I pay for this one when I can play for free anywhere else?
I see this as a huge party celebrating the community we've built over the years, unlike any other event in the world. There is no Quizzo Bowl in NYC, none in DC, and none in LA. There is only Quizzo Bowl, and it will only be found at one place in 2008: the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, PA on March 29th.

How many people can I have on a team?
Up to eight. In order to make seating as easy as possible (no assigned seating this year), I do ask that you please try to come as close to 8 as possible.

Is it going to be difficult to get to the Blue Horizon?
No, the Blue Horizon is roughly a mile north of City Hall. I have been there on nights that were busier than Quizzo Bowl and did not have trouble finding parking. If you are taking SEPTA, take the Broad Street line to Girard. It is then a two block walk North of Girard.

Will the questions be harder than usual?
Yes, a little bit. This is, after all, the Grandaddy of them all. But not unbearably, overwhelmingly hard.

Will there be food at this event?
Light snacks will be provided. The Philly Pretzel Factory is hooking me up with a great deal on pretzels, so we should have a fair amount of those, but I would suggest grabbing a bit before you leave the house. There will be some late-night snacks for sale at the Urban Saloon afterparty.

Will this be one of the most fun nights in Philadelphia this year?
Yes, guaranteed.

Will you be wearing a garish outfit at this event, Johnny?
No, I will be dressed quite plainly.

What's up with all of this sponsorship? Are you selling out on us Johnny?
Absolutely. To rent the room, get the band I wanted, get a halftime host, come up with prize money, buy all of the kegs, etc. tickets would have been at least $50. But thanks to our sponsors, tix are a ridiculously cheap $25. That is why I do ask that you please take a moment to check out our sponsors on the right hand side of the page, because they really did make this event possible.

What will the winners get?
There is a $1,000 purse. Winners get $600 plus free memberships to Zipcar, 2nd place gets $300, 3rd place gets $100.

What time should I show up?
Doors open at 7, band will start around 7:30, and quizzo will start at 8:15 p.m.

What time do you think we'll be done?
Gonna try to be done sometime between 10:30-11 p.m.

Will you be rapping at this event, Johnny?
Damnit, you just won't let this one die, will you? No, no I won't rapping at this event. I know I said that before Quizzo Bowls 1,2, and 3, but this year I mean it!

If you have any more questions, post them below.

saloon.jpg Found the spot for the Quizzo Bowl afterparty. The Urban Saloon, a short cab ride from the Blue Horizon, will be the home of the post bowl bash, and they are hooking us up with $2.50 domestics and $3.50 crafts and imports for the event. They will also be keeping the kitchen open late just for us with a few late night snacks. As those of you who played the City vs, City Smackdown in December can attest, it's a great bar, and will be a great spot to unwind after the big event.
200px-Mental_floss_5.2.jpg Hey gang, the good people at Mental Floss magazine have sent me 100 copies of their upcoming edition to give away at Quizzo Bowl. If you're a giant nerd Because you're a giant nerd, you should definitely be reading this magazine. It is honestly the best new magazine I have read in years, full of strange and fun trivia. From George Washington self help tips to Quizzes about Celebrities With Girlie Middle Names, you're gonna dig this mag. Free copies to the first 100 people through the doors at QBIV. And after the annual dumping of the tickets, the Lovely Ginger and I will picking up tix to give out more prizes than ever before. We're gonna be giving away tons of gift certificates to some of Philly's best restaurants and museums. I'll have more details on free stuff as we get closer to game time.
beautyshop.jpg The Beauty Shop Cafe, aka the place where I get my coffee (corner of 20th and Fitzwater) has signed on as a Quizzo Bowl sponsor. I am a big fan of this place due to it's excellent coffee and baked goods, as well as a few tasty sandwiches. In 2007, their iced coffee was named Best in the City by City Paper. And more importantly, the owner John helps me come up with ideas for my Metro column. So all in all I am a big fan of this place and I am sure that you will be too. Check 'em out on Myspace. I'd like to reiterate that there is no way I coulda made tickets this cheap without our fine sponsors, so I do ask that you give 'em a try. Zipcar, the world's largest car sharing service, is providing financial assistance. Sly Fox Brewery, gold medal winners at the Great American Beer Festival in 2007, will be providing beer. Foobooz, Philly's premier food and drink website, is providing promotional assistance.
blue-horizon new (Custom).jpg Tickets to Quizzo Bowl IV are on sale now! Just click here or on the link on the upper right hand side of the page and place your order. I found a great fair trade ticket service called Brown Paper Tickets. There is a ridiculously cheap $1.61 surcharge to order online. Tickets are $25 (plus sucharge) per person in advance, $30 at the door. That $25 covers not only the Quiz, Black Elvis, and the Legendary WID, it also covers your drinks, courtesy of SlyFox Beer. Oh, and keep in mind, there is going to be a documentary team there, so your win won't only secure your team $600 cash and free subscriptions to Zipcar, but immortalization in film! I will have tickets ($25 flat) on sale at quizzo starting on Wednesday. Team max is 8 people, and if you attend, you must play. If you have any questions, let me know.
blue-horizon new.jpg UPDATED: BUY TICKETS HERE. First of all, what we already knew: Quizzo Bowl IV will be held on Saturday, March 29th at the Legendary Blue Horizon on 1314 North Broad Street at 8 p.m. But now's the time to give you guys the scoop on what is going to be one of the most amazing shows in Philadelphia in 2008.

elvis_sing.jpg Headlining the show will be the biggest legend to ever hail from Johnny's hometown of Nassawadox, VA: Black Elvis (aka Clearance Giddens). Black Elvis has been entertaining folks in Eastern Virginia for over 15 years, and reached the pinnacle of his fame in 1992 with an appearance on the Arsenio Hall Show and a role in the movie Honeymoon in Vegas. He continued to make occasional appearances on the Shore afterwards, but has only recently decided to begin a full fledged comeback, similar to the one that white Elvis undertook in 1968. Clearance begins his comeback at Quizzo Bowl IV.

Wid.jpeg Doing a show in a building that had the word "legendary" in the title meant that my halftime act could only be one man: the Legendary WID. Wid used to sell out shows regularly at the historic Bottom Line in New York in the 1980s and has appeared on television countless times, from the old days on Make Me Laugh to a recent appearance on Fox's 30 Seconds to Fame. Moreover, Wid is viewed as a legend by essentially every young comedian in the Philadelphia area, because not only is his brand of comedy sheer genius, but he goes out of his way to encourage and help new comedians in the local area. To see a bit of one of the Wid's performances, click here. Opening for the WID will be longtime Johnny Goodtimes contributer and the 3rd place finisher in Philly's funniest competition last year, Chip Chantry. zipcar-logo.jpg And who is helping to make this event possible and keep ticket prices at a minimum? Zipcar has agreed to help sponsor the Quizzo Bowl, as have Sly Fox and Foobooz. Zipcar is a company that allows people to rent a car for a few hours at a time, and everything can be done online. When you sign up, you get a Zipcard. Once you have a Zipcard, you just make a reservation online, walk up to the car, unlock it with your Zipcard, and drive off. Gas and insurance are included. Pretty kool. The Locust Rendezvous, perhaps the most affordable bar in Center City, located at Broad and Locust, is also helping keep ticket prices to a minimum. As most of you know, Foobooz is Philadelphia's premiere food and beverage website, run by one Mr. Trivia Art. The website has quickly established itself as a favorite of local gourmets and gourmands alike, and has received high praise from the City Paper, Philly Mag, and Philly Style Mag. Our third sponsor is Sly Fox Beer, who are going to provide the booze! Sly Fox opened their brewery and restaurant in Phoenixville in 1995, and have since expanded to Royersford. The brewery's beers have medalled twice at the Great American Beer Festival and Sly Fox was named 3rd best brewpub in America on beeradvocate.com in 2003 and was named Best Brewery in Philadelphia by Philly Mag in 2004. The Beauty Shop Cafe, located on the corner of 20th and Fitzwater, is a great little coffee shop with great coffee, great tea (tea's my new thing, trying to slow down on the coffee), and great snacks. The Philadelphia Pretzel Factory is cutting me a great deal on soft pretzels for snacks.

To purchase tickets, you can either click here or buy them from me at the various quizzos I perform at during the week.

For more info about Quizzo Bowl IV, click here. If you still have any questions, please contact me.

Alright, first of all, I do have a few sponsors lined up for Quizzo Bowl IV. (Sadly, Applebee's does not have money in the budget to help out.) I'd love to get more before I send out my press release early next week. Please e-mail me if you are at all interested. Sponsorship is extremely reasonable and this event is gonna be get a lot of attention in the coming month, especially when I let people know who the band is. Today I was able to finalize the halftime entertainer, who I am quite excited about. There are going to be plenty of announcements on the website starting next week.

I am debating on whether to use the ring as a stage. Obviously, I would love to but it does cost $1,000 extra for them to put it up and break it down. I'd have to raise the price (which, thanks to sponsorship and me being a great guy, is going to be very reasonable) $5 to cover it. If I raise ticket prices, I will also raise the prize money for first and second. Let me know what you think below. Have a great weekend gang!

blue-horizon1_G.jpg Let's get ready to Ruuuuuumble. The Blue Horizon, named the Number One Boxing Venue in the World by Ring magazine, will play host to a different type of heavyweight clash on March 29th, as the greatest beer addled minds in Philadelphia go head to head in Quizzo Bowl IV. The 150 year old venue, located on 1314 North Broad Street, was initially an enormous mansion, then became a theatre, then a world famous boxing venue. It is where eventual middleweight and current light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins recorded his first professional boxing victory. Boxing and acting legend Tex Cobb earned his stripes at "The Blue", and will be honored there at the fights this Friday (If you wanna check out the venue, I'd suggest going for a fight. It doesn't matter if you like boxing or not. The atmosphere is electric.) I went to see a fight there last year, and was just amazed by the venue, and thought how awesome it would be to hold a Quizzo Bowl there. At first, it was just a pipe dream, but after speaking to the owner a few months later, I realized it could be a reality.

But you don't have to be a fight fan to appreciate this historic Philadelphia landmark. If you like old, historic buildings that are high on character, you're gonna love this place. And this is only the first Quizzo Bowl announcement. There will be many more to come in future weeks, as I will announce the band, the halftime performers, the prizes, and much, much more. Stay tuned.

Finally got a call from The Man this morning. He's in for March 29th. I have a meeting with the venue tomorrow morning. Hopefully, at that time, I can finalize, and I'll be able to announce the venue by Monday. There is one little wrinkle with the venue I need to work out tomorrow, and if that is ironed out, It's On. After some early delays, I really think this is going to be the best Quizzo Bowl yet. And since we have a venue with more seating that the World Cafe Live, even more of you will get to see it. Sweet.

of=50,332,442 (Custom).jpg Been getting a lot of questions lately about QB4, and rightfully so. Usually, this is around the time of year that we do it. Well, due to a number of factors (a harder time than expected working something out with World Cafe Live, spring breaks, beer festivals, weddings, etc.), we have had to push it back this year. But no big whoop. I have a date tentatively set (March 29th), but I need to make sure I can get the band here on that date. Once they give me the OK (hopefull by the start of next week), I think I can sign the paperwork and we can start moving forward. As I said before, I think I have the venue I want, and it is a freaking awesome venue, but I want to have it in writing before I go off blabbing about it too much. Just trust me, it's going to be off the chain. Thanks for your patience. -Mgmt.
hallofflags.jpg Went and checked out both Houston Hall and the Armory today. Houston Hall is a bit more pleasing aesthetically, though the Armory holds more people. So I need to do the math and see which one makes more sense. We've sold out at 300 at the WCL the past three years, so a part of me wants to see if we can get 400. Houston Hall will probably hold right around 300. I need to send proposals to both and see which one works out. I think we're probably looking at an early March kickoff either way. Houston Hall only has an opening for March 8. I think that is Penn's spring break. Is that gonna cost us a lot of people? I know we have a decent amount of Penn profs, but I dunno if they really go anywhere for Spring Break, and we don't really have that many Penn students. Anyways, things are looking up. Hopefully we'll have a venue by Christmas.

Hey gang, I've got a lot more QB3 pics over at flickr. If you have any QB3 pics you want added to the mix, please send them to me!

flashdance (Custom).bmp
A sold out crowd at the World Cafe Live was rocking on Saturday night, as JGT turned it up to 11 and the Kenny Gates Trio rocked the house. In the end, the Sofa Kingdom stood alone as King of the Dorks, and the Champs dreams of a three-peat were dashed.

It was a night that had it all: devastating drum solos, major surprises, half naked women, a half naked quizmaster, and of course controversy. The night began with Alexis Brie Wildau performing on the ukelele. The crowd was a little skeptical at first, but warmed to her peformance when she kicked into Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer". She was followed by One Man Show David Smith, who played guitar while performing the human pretzel. (If the human pretzel is indeed something that is "performed".)
Picture 004 (Custom).jpg
Finally it was time for JGT to take the stage. Despite assurances that I would not be rapping, I surprised everyone by opening the show with some totally ill hip-hop. With the Bears in the Super Bowl, it was obvious what song I had to rap: The Quizzo Bowl Shuffle. It was then time for the actual contest to begin.

There were 37 teams, and 6 of them emerged from the first round unscathed. My dad's team was in last after one round. But they rebounded strongly acing round number 2, the 50/50 round (Chicago or Indy). The Satan's MInions were the only team to make it thru two rounds without missing a question, and they held a narrow 37-36 lead over MAGMA after two.
umbrella (Custom).jpg
Halftime saw the emegence of the Hellcat Girls (They were the same as the Bawdy Girls I had been promoting, but they just wanted me to announce them by a different name). The reaction to their performance was mixed, as I believe they usually play in wilder, rowdier venues. I didn't see any of it, as I was preparing for my song and dance number. When they were done, I emerged from the back wearing a lacy tux, but it didn't stay on long. Though I only performed Flashdance for about 2 minutes, the performance was enough to firmly establish me as one of Philly's most talented singers and dancers. Again, I hope to have video tommorrow.
what a feelin (Custom) (3).bmp
The Champs had struggled through two rounds, but made their move in Round Three, as they were the only team to ace the Sexy and Risque Wild Card Round. But even a perfect round only put them in 2nd, behind the shocking leaders after three: Barbaro's S & M: Beating a Dead Horse, a team led by Trivia Art and Smackdown. After another incredible jam session by the Kenny Gates Trio, it was on to the Impossible Round, a round marked by controversy, finger pointing, and the emergence of a new champion.

There are rumors that we will have some video from Flashdance up tommorrow. Again, those are only rumors.

sofa_kingdom_qb3_sm.jpg
The Sofa Kingdom won Quizzo Bowl 3 on Saturday night, in a match filled with intrigue, heartbreak, and controversy. Of course, there was more than just quizzo, as we had a ukelele player, a human pretzel, burlesque dancers, and a jazz band (the Kenny Gates Trio) that absolutely ripped it. Oh, and then there was Flashdance. Please feel free to leave your thoughts and recollections below, and I will be back on Monday with a full recap of the festivities and final scores of all of the teams. We got some great pics, but if you got any photos of the event PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE email them to me, so we can put all of them together in the same place. Thanks!!!

Doors at 6:30 p.m. Kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Champ crowned at 10:30 p.m. After party at Devil's Alley at 11 p.m. BRING IT!!!

Fininmarigold041305.jpg
Another sweet prize that we'll be raffling off on Saturday night: A dinner for two at Marigold Kitchen (501 S. 45th Street), whose chef, Michael Solomonov, was named Philly Magazine's "Best New Chef" in 2006. In addition, I've got a gift certificate to the Black Sheep for $40, and a certificate to the Bards for $40. I also have tickets to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden and a $100 gift certificate to Gayle. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and show starts promptly (for once) at 7:30 p.m. Then, after the Bowl, we'll be heading to the Devil's Alley 19th and Chestnut for the Gangsta Party. It's gonna be a fun night!

qbpics001 (Custom) (2).jpg
Alright, here's some stuff that I'll tell you about Saturday night, so we're all on the same page. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show will be starting at 7:30 p.m. sharp, so get there before then. There are going to be a variety of acts. Brie Wildau will be playing ukelele, the One Man Show David Smith will be putting on, well, a one man show, and the Kenny Gates Trio will be playing jazz between rounds. At halftime, the Bawdy Girls will be performing.

Number one most asked question: Will there be a beer special? Yes. They will have a $3 Troegs special and a $3 Lager special. As for the quizzo, it will be 12 questions instead of the usual 10. It will be a bit more difficult than usual. Keep in mind, there will be around 40 teams there, so it will also take a little longer to grade than usual. However, with the jazz band playing, I don't think you'll mind. I am expecting the event to run from 7:30 until about 10:30. I will not be rapping at this event.

There is an afterparty/JGT B-day party after quizzo. It will be taking place at the Devil's Alley (1907 Chestnut). Everyone showing a ticket stub will get happy hour prices all night. Parties are fun.

There will be random giveaways throughout the evening, including gift certificates to several local restaurants and bars, tickets to the Adventure Aquarium, and the grand prize giveaway, a $100 gift certificate to Gayle (617 S. 3rd Street, between South and Bainbridge), Chef Daniel Stern's place which was named "One of the Hottest New American Restaurants" by Bon Appetit magazine last year.

Yeah, we've got a sellout for Quizzo Bowl III. Sorry gang. Anyways, I'll let you know some more about the upcoming show later today.

devils-alley2_U.jpg
Yo, peeps, the fun on Saturday night will not end at the World Cafe Live. We're gonna keep the party going at The Devil's Alley (1907 Chestnut, a short cab ride from the World Cafe Live). The good people at the Alley are allowing everyone who shows their ticket stub from QB3 to enjoy Happy Hour prices all night long. Of course, even if you don't attend the Quizzo Bowl, you are free to swing by, buy me a drink, and tell me what a great guy I am. I mean, come on. It's my big day.

08-29-05%20024 (Custom).jpg
Rumors that Johnny will be performing a certain type of music at a certain event that may or may not be taking place this Saturday are patently false. "Oh, here we go again," said a visibly dismayed Goodtimes. "Why is it that people can't come to grips with the fact that that part of my career is over. Was it fun kicking it with Slick Rick? Was it great to get to date Eve for a short while? Of course. But those days are over. I turn 32 on Saturday. That's like 100 in rap years. It's over people. Deal with it. And move on."

QB3_blue.gif
If you decide to get QB3 tix this weekend, you can do so by going to the World Cafe Live website. If you and a few friends wanna go but don't have a team of 8, that is fine. I do have tickets for the bar, where smaller teams can play. Talk to me next week. If you really wanna go (and you do), do not wait until the day of the event to buy your teams tickets! We've sold a little over 170 tickets so far, and I do think that it could very well sell out before the night of the show. If you need to contact me concerning Quizzo Bowl, then click here.

QB3_blue.gif
Yes, I will have Quizzo Bowl Tix on me this week. Sold about 60 last week and expect to have that number rise substantially this week. I would advise you to get your 8 person team together and get your ducks in a row, because it is on.

Johnny Goodtimes, long considered one of Philly's greatest entertainers by the underground but snubbed by the mainstream, thinks he knows why. "I have succeeded in many things, but have failed in one-to make quizzo sexy," says the award winning quizmaster. "That's about to change. On February 3rd, to be precise. On that date (which also happens to be Goodtimes birthday), we will be putting the IQ in Risque." But Goodtimes thinks his vision is even grander. "This is about more than making quizzo sexy. It's about making Philadelphia sexy. For too long we've been looked at as more trashy than sexy, a stereotype perpetuated by that neanderthal eating contest that takes place every year. Trashy has had it too good in this town for too long. On February 3rd, sexy fights back."

Therefore JGT has hired the Bawdy Girls as his halftime entertainment. THe Bawdy Girls are women who realize that sexy is real, and not something that comes from saline, silicone, and botox. Much like the fact that the true measure of a person's worth is the amount of questions they can answer, not the amount of wings they can eat. There is already Quizzo Bowl vs. Wing Bowl smack talk going down at Blinq, so I highly suggest you check it out. JGT will be selling tix at quizzo all week ($15 a pop).

One thing I haven't mentioned earlier that I've gotten numerous emails about is team size. The answer is that team max is 8. How easiest to get tickets? Come to quizzo. I will be selling tix at quizzo all next week. You can buy them online at worldcafelive.com as well, but they are more expensive there. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Oh yeah, and February 3rd just happens to be my birthday, so there is talk of a birthday afterparty. I'll keep ya updated.

QB3.gif
I woke up this morning grumpy. Here we were, less than three weeks away from QB3, and I still had no halftime show and no headline performers. So I met with the lovely Ginger today to get some work done, and let's just say that after screaming at each other for several hours, we somehow ended up very close to signing an extremely sexy halftime act. Then she had a brainstorm about a band, and I'm meeting with the leader of said band tommorrow. It sounds PERFECT, but I gotta see if they're available before I give out any details. I'm starting to get really excited about this. Stay tuned!

QB3.gif
I will have tix to Quizzo Bowl 3 on sale all week. First come first serve in terms of picking your seats. You can also purchase them online, but they are $15 if you buy them from me and $18 if you buy them online. Still putting together my line-up, but you know if you saw the first two that it will be awesome and well worth the money (Ok, besides the freaking bellydancer at QB1. Can we just move past that?). I am also raising the stakes. In the past, the winners got $300. This year, the winner gets $500 and 2nd place gets $250. I will also have lots of free stuff to give away. This is the Quizzo event of the year. Do not miss it! Doors open at 6;30 p.m. and quizzo begins at 7:30 p.m.

Once again, I have gotten a ton of feedback from bands interested in playing at Quizzo Bowl. But during the middle of the week, I have absolutely no time to listen to all of the bands. I will listen to all of them this weekend, as that is my only objective besides watching the Eagles game.

Hey gang, tix for Quizzo Bowl 3 will go on sale this Monday. You will be able to buy them either online or on consignment from me.

As you might imagine, things are getting a little crazy as we head into QUizzo Bowl time, so if I'm not posting quite as much, you'll know why. (OK, non sequiter: I just sneezed really hard and hurt my shoulder. Bad. I'm not kidding.) Anyways, I'm getting TONS of responses from bands wanting to play at QB3, so I'll be scoping them out quite a bit over the next few days. If you contacted me, thank you. Fair warning: It will probably take at least a few days for me to get back to you. I'm also waiting to hear back from my halftime performer. Hopefully I'll have some more info soon. I expect tix to go on sale next week. I'll keep ya updated.

The good news is that we're gonna get to party like rock stars at this year's Quizzo Bowl, because it's on a Saturday. The bad news is that the Crowd Pleasers cannot perform, since they perform at Bob and Barbara's on Saturday nights. So Johnny needs a new backup band, and I figured that it would be fun to get the word out and see who was interested. I'm probably wanting to stay lounge-actish, if possible, but all entries will be considered. If you're in a band, have friends who are, or know of a perfect group for this, it is a paying gig and it is on the main stage at the World Cafe Live on Saturday, February 3rd. Just contact me if you are interested.

It's official, gang. Quizzo Bowl 3 will be held on Saturday, February 3rd, meaning that that weekend will include: Wing Bowl, Quizzo Bowl, the Super Bowl, and my birthday. It is going to be the most awesomest weekend ever. Tickets will go on sale in a couple of weeks, and I'll have more details next week.

The lovely Ginger and I hit the road today, looking for a place to hold Quizzo Bowl 3. We started at the Mummers Museum. If I held it there, we would do it on Sunday, January 28th or Saturday, Feb. 3rd. Tickets would be $20, but that would include all you can drink (beer, well drinks, and wine). We'd have snacks, but no real dinner food. We also checked out the Golden Palace, that crazy looking Chinese place in South Philly. Big and tacky, with a great stage. It's BYO, but I would probably try to get a beer sponsor, and make it $15 all you can drink beer. Of course, you could also order off the menu. Again, Sunday the 28th. And then there is the World Cafe. The only date they can give me is friday, January 26th. Don't know why, but something about a friday jsut seems weird. Tix would probably be $12-$15, but you'd have to pay for your own booze and food. Of course, it is the nicest facility with the best acoustics. Not sure if I could get the Crowd Pleasers, though, b/c they usually play at Bob and Barbara's on fridays and don't know if they could get out of it. Anyways, please give me your thoughts below. Would a friday work, do you think? Also, we will shortly have our first post from Ginger on our first ever "Ginger Thursday."

I liked the Mummer Museum suggestion. I just spoke with them on the phone. I think I'm gonna go check out the space now and see if I think it's big enough for our purposes. I'll keep you updated.
