More Cheesesteak Controversy
On Saturday afternoon, Glenn Macnow and some other celebrity judges voted for the best cheesesteak in the city. John's Roast Pork came out the winner. No controversy there. But it was the 3rd place finisher that ruffled some feathers over at Foobooz last week. Chink's Steaks, who finished third, got a thorough haranguing from Kirsten Henri due to it's racist name. What are your thoughts? Should Chink's Steaks be forced to change their name?

They shouldn't be forced, but people should not go to a place like that. And these contests and media awards should not consider these racist assholes for their awards until they change the name. And I like how they excuse it because it's been the name for decades - so since overt racism against Asians was socially tolerated in the 40s, we shouldn't have a problem with it today.
No. If Politically Correct Whack Jobs like jmp won't go...fine. Let the Marketplace decide.
If they lose business they'll change the name. If not...Only PC Whack Jobs worry about this stuff.
Did you know that "Applebees" is yiddish for "Dirty Mexicans"?
I'll never go there again. And that was a BIG hangout of mine.
As Johnny would say, Oh My Goodness. I am in the strange situation of having to agree with Ern today. Why is it that so many people do not look at things in historical context? Chink's Steaks was named at a time when there was no derogatory context to the name and it had nothing to do with the Chinese---Chink was not an uncommon nickname back in the day. Indeed, one of Philadelphia's great basketball legends from that period is Ray "Chink" Scott (link for those of you who don't know your basketball history--http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/scottra01.html)
Why should Chink's Steaks have to forego 60 years of goodwill because some of you don't like their use of speech? Can anyone get into their heads that free speech does not hurt anyone and it is a slippery slope when you start censoring speech because it offends you?
Actually, from what I have read, the owner took on the nickname of "Chink" because he had slanted eyes as a kid. An obvious reference.
Yes, but that's different. The connotation that someone had slanty eyes and thus took on the nickname "Chink" is evidence that the term was not deemed derogatory in the sense of the "N" word. The guy wore the nickname proudly---something you would never see of a truly offensive term. This is more similar to the use by college football teams of Indian names and symbols---over time, they came to be deemed derogatory by the affected groups, but were not so deemed in the '30s and '40s. I am putting it again in historical perspective.
If there's room on this planet for a restaurant named Pink Taco, then there is room for Chink's Steaks. However, Gook's Hoagies needs to be shut down immediately.
Yes, but the guy who took the nickname was not Asian. If a Gentile with stereotypically Jewish features in the 1940s took on the nickname "Kike", and thusly named his restaurant "Kike's", his family would have to change the name of the restaurant by now, despite the fact that the term was initially used as a term of endearment among Jews. Of course, even if the guy was Jewish, he'd still have to change the name of the restaurant.
And Chink most certainly was a derisive term in the 1940s. I am not a fan of whitewashing history, and in some ways the restaurant being a reminder of the way things used to be is a good thing, but I certainly understand why people are upset about it.
I am still offended by PalestraJon calling someone a "slippery slope" in his first post. I don't care HOW sneaking the guy is.
I'm not advocating censorship - the store shouldn't be forced to change their name, but the owners are definitely racist and decent people should not go there.
Chink was always a racist term against Asians. It was common at the time because racism against Asians in that period was considered perfectly OK then (see "Breakfast at Tiffany's" for example).
And Ern, you know how silly it makes you seem to be using the term 'PC' in a serious context. There is no such thing as political correctness; it's right-wing buzzword primarily used defensively when the offensiveness of someone's comments is being pointed out.
Jay's Potato Chips was once called Jap's Potato Chips. But it wasn't Political Correctness that made them change their name, it was Pearl Harbor.
It's almost time for lunch. I wonder if there's a Pink Taco near by?
"I'm not advocating censorship - the store shouldn't be forced to change their name, but the owners are definitely racist and decent people should not go there."
So, you're against censoring the name, but you're for driving the store out of business because of it?
And the difference there is...?
I personally couldn't give a flying fuck about what the name of a cheesesteak place I've never heard of is or isn't, but idiotic shit like "decent people shouldn't go someplace because the name of it may or may not offend certain people" is an awfully big part of why conservatives can still get away with using the word "liberal" as a pejorative and why we lose national elections.
The name of a sandwich shop, seriously, WHO GIVES A FUCK?
wait, the steaks are good? Then I guess it's a fine name. If not then those horrible racist people ought to shut down now. Maybe sooner.
If the name offends you and there is a giant caricature outside then fine - raise a stink. If it is a 40 + year old nickname that stuck for whatever reason then so be it. Do people run around Wildwood sporting Fighting Irish tattoos on their shoulders? Hell yeah. Do I boycott the Jersey shore because as a pacifist I find the insinuation of aggressive Celts offensive? I boycott eh Jersey shore because it is a shithole. It if was Kauai nice then who cares?!1#@! I'd go lots and lots.
The Asian community is responsible for such treasures s Darkie toothpaste - look it up - and nobody is boycotting Colgate, the company that bought them.
At then end of the day it really is this type of tripe that makes liberals seem like out of touch hand wringers rather than principled people who are against torture and the discarding of inconvenient parts of the constitution.
Wait, we're against torture? Since when?
Well I guess the conversation will now shift to the definition of Torture ie if you're a masochist it's good. If not, it's bad. If it's someone else...
That Pink Taco was good. Thanks for the tip JG no T.
I'm fairly certain, Ern, that in re masochism torture is only good if you're the torturee.
Of course, my knowledge of such topics is limited.
Yes... limited...
"So, you're against censoring the name, but you're for driving the store out of business because of it?
And the difference there is...?"
Because censorship would be the government forcing them to change their name. Refusing to patronize the place, on the other hand, is private individuals pressuring them to change - surely you see the difference?
Sorry. I assumed you were using the word "censorship" in the standard not-knowing-what-it-actually-means stupid person way. Kudos.
You are correct in a semantic sense, but the entire argument is still idiotic.
Yes, I should have been more specific. If the torturer is a Sadist and the torturee is a Masochist than as far as they're concerned it's a good thing. For other people...
Dang, jmp! You're going back and forth with this non-issue plus you're giving traffic reports on City Hall! You run out of comic books to read? At least I have an excuse. I'm running for President!
I am Asian and I have no problem with the name of the place. There was no such thing (and some would argue there still isn't)as political correctness in the lower Northeast 40+ years ago. Do they discriminate against Asian people as overtly as Geno's discriminates against Mexicans? I don't know since I've never gone to Chink's. If they do, I would have a problem with that.
all i know is that if there was a place called nigger's steaks it would be closed down in one second.
the place makes awesome cheesesteaks tho
its also funny how you all will say "n-word" but just throw out chink like its nothing that shows something
