Quizzo Bowl FAQ

blue-horizon new-thumb-400x253.jpg Ok, you know the basics. Saturday, March 29th at the Blue Horizon on 1314 North Broad Street. Kickoff at 8 p.m. Here are a few of the questions I've been getting.

Where can I get tickets?
You can purchase them from me at each of my events this week, or you can purchase them online here.

How much are tickets?
I have always made an effort to keep Quizzo Bowl Tickets as cheap as possible while ensuring that I don't totally lose my ass. The $25 per ticket in advance ($30 day of the show) is actually the best deal ever, as it will include not only the show, but also your drinks for the evening, courtesy of Sly Fox.

Why should I pay for this one when I can play for free anywhere else?
I see this as a huge party celebrating the community we've built over the years, unlike any other event in the world. There is no Quizzo Bowl in NYC, none in DC, and none in LA. There is only Quizzo Bowl, and it will only be found at one place in 2008: the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, PA on March 29th.

How many people can I have on a team?
Up to eight. In order to make seating as easy as possible (no assigned seating this year), I do ask that you please try to come as close to 8 as possible.

Is it going to be difficult to get to the Blue Horizon?
No, the Blue Horizon is roughly a mile north of City Hall. I have been there on nights that were busier than Quizzo Bowl and did not have trouble finding parking. If you are taking SEPTA, take the Broad Street line to Girard. It is then a two block walk North of Girard.

Will the questions be harder than usual?
Yes, a little bit. This is, after all, the Grandaddy of them all. But not unbearably, overwhelmingly hard.

Will there be food at this event?
Light snacks will be provided. The Philly Pretzel Factory is hooking me up with a great deal on pretzels, so we should have a fair amount of those, but I would suggest grabbing a bit before you leave the house. There will be some late-night snacks for sale at the Urban Saloon afterparty.

Will this be one of the most fun nights in Philadelphia this year?
Yes, guaranteed.

Will you be wearing a garish outfit at this event, Johnny?
No, I will be dressed quite plainly.

What's up with all of this sponsorship? Are you selling out on us Johnny?
Absolutely. To rent the room, get the band I wanted, get a halftime host, come up with prize money, buy all of the kegs, etc. tickets would have been at least $50. But thanks to our sponsors, tix are a ridiculously cheap $25. That is why I do ask that you please take a moment to check out our sponsors on the right hand side of the page, because they really did make this event possible.

What will the winners get?
There is a $1,000 purse. Winners get $600 plus free memberships to Zipcar, 2nd place gets $300, 3rd place gets $100.

What time should I show up?
Doors open at 7, band will start around 7:30, and quizzo will start at 8:15 p.m.

What time do you think we'll be done?
Gonna try to be done sometime between 10:30-11 p.m.

Will you be rapping at this event, Johnny?
Damnit, you just won't let this one die, will you? No, no I won't rapping at this event. I know I said that before Quizzo Bowls 1,2, and 3, but this year I mean it!

If you have any more questions, post them below.

Where do Smokers go between rounds to mingle?

can't you just smoke inside and call it a performance? I think the merits / negatives of a smoking ban would make for good fodder on a site like this. Surprised it hasn't been done.

I think pretty much everybody besides Darth Ern is in agreement that the smoking ban has been great. No coughing your head off even if your not a smoker, no food that tastes like smoke, and no smelling gross when you get home from the bar. Where's the downside?

Darth Ern said:

Talk to the owners who are losing money because of Socialist/Nanny policies implemented by political hacks who don't have a clue in running a business.

You don't like Smoke. Leave! But that's not the Socialist way. Personal Responsibility! Not in a Nanny State.

Which is why most of them are going bankrupt!

I know several bar owners and i haven't heard any of them complain about the smoking ban. I can say with certainty that I have lost 0% of the quizzo crowd due to the smoking ban, and may even have gained a few people who didn't go before. Your theory would be nice if it was true.

Ern....I agree with you only to the extent that hopelessly addicted smokers should have a place that caters to them. However, there is a "pickled egg" exception to the smoking ban and it appears that even though you don't give a rat's ass about the food served in a bar, you haven't been going to those bars operating under the exception. If the place is a restaurant, it should not subject the non-smoking majority and the employees of those places to clouds of cigarette smoke. If you want to hang at the Vous, Locust Street is a nice place to light up this time of year.

Well, we all know what chow hounds you and Johnny are. I have no problem not smoking in a restaurant. Unlike you two, I eat to live, not live to eat. I eat! I leave!
But Bars! I'm sure you guys are doing the PC Count. ex: We use to have forty customers; now we have forty-five. Non-PC ie:Business Count ex. We use to sell 400 beers; now we sell 90.
You guys and your PC Lingo never fooled me and more and more people are wiseing up.
I say again: Where do Smokers go between rounds to mingle? As my friend, Elvis, would say "It's such an easy question! Why can't I find an answer?

Ern, if that were true, there would be statistics to support it. I don't think there is any evidence that smokers are drinking less because they have to go outside to smoke. Generally, what has happened with smoking bans is that smokers get all uppity with fury at the loss of freedom when the ban is passed, threaten to drive to Chester County and eventually simply go back to where they normally went and take a few extra minutes to go outside for a smoke. Notice there have been no articles about failing bars (except that strip joint on US-130 in Bordentown) because of the ban. It just isn't happening.

Though I am a huge fan of his body of work, in this case Darth Ern is sadly mistaken. Restaurant and bar owners love smoking bans. They may not beforehand but once they hit they LOVE them.

Restaurant/bar revenue goes up OVERNIGHT when smoking bans come down. If I am remembering right when the ban first hit New York in 2003 restaurant/bar revenues went up some ridiculous number like 20% the first month and remained high thereafter. I have not seen the exact numbers for Philadelphia (probably somewhat smaller given the smaller customer base) but I imagine they're similar. I certainly haven't heard any complaints from the people I know in the hospitality business.

Restaurant owners love smoking bans. To say otherwise is to be uninformed or willfully delusional. Or looking to start an argument where none exists.

Casinos, on the other hand...

My friends don't believe me.
As I said I have no problem with Smoking Bans in Restaurants. If fact I'm all in favor of converting Smoking Areas to Cell Phone Areas so I don't have to listen to their Brain-Dead Conversations.
But Bars! Here's the Darth Ern Statistic: When I'm outside smoking I'm not inside drinking. Hence: I drink less; I spend less! (Source: Darth Ern's Cash Flow) Remember: Figures don't lie but Liars can figure.
Again; one more time; Where do smokers go between rounds to mingle?

I didn't know Dark Horse John was a huge fan. I learn something new every day on this website.

Does "drinks" also include Coke, Sprite, et al?

Tony Burton said:

Can we move the discussion about social policy issues like smoking bans elsewhere on this site (or somewhere else altogether)? JGT asked we post questions about Quizzo Bowl here. The question of where to smoke between rounds is legit, but debating the pros and cons of the ban itself does not augment the FAQs.

Thanks, Tony.
It's such an easy question. Why can't I find an answer?
